Designer Overview and Tips for Success

A few tips to be a successful Designer

Your Role

As a designer, your role is to make everything look good! In actuality, design influences everything that we do at Vaudeville Ventures. You work hand in hand with strategists, telling stories using impactful visuals, thinking critically about design, and demonstrating experiences with fast and tangible prototypes. You are part of a team that spans product designers, visual strategists, filmmakers, animators, photographers and illustrators.

Ten Tips for Good Design at Vaudeville

Here are ten tried and true tips that every good project manager should know.

1. Think big. We use design to help people see an ambitious vision, for what the world can be, then help them get there.

2. Explore, Expand, Refine. These are the 3 phases of walking clients through a creative process, from ideation to execution.

3. Be able to critique your own work. We are constantly iterating and collaborating in new ways, and one important part of that is the ability to critique your own work in order to spark new ideas.

4. ...But defend your design decisions. Your decisions are the basis of what we produce for clients, and the confidence in our deliverables stems from the defense of the design rationale.

5. Communicate with everyone. Your team needs to hear your thoughts and concerns, and your manager needs to know your workload and blockers. Communication across the board is key.

6. Process is your friend. The design process here allows us to collaborate and share ideas while still hitting our goals and deadlines. Lean in and help us iterate and improve.

7. Know the tools you’ve got. Process information, templates, software and tools, and research sources can all be found in the Design Bible.

8. Research is key. Being able to understand current trends as well as collect reference material for a design project is key in creating a design that can be supported.

9. Let’s collaborate. The design team is a close knit group and it is valuable for everyone to share ideas and design inspiration throughout the design process as well as give feedback to fellow designers to help foster a creative environment.

10. You’ve Got This. Believe in yourself, all sketches and brainstorms are worth talking about and saving as they help us explore new ideas and can pave the way for something no one expected.
